Comunidades Unidas Por Salud means Communities United for Health. CUPS is an ecumenical Christian organization that uses volunteer labor to assist border communities in Mexico in their efforts to improve their lives. CUPS facilitates construction efforts for valuable programs sponsored and sustained by the Mexican communities.

Founded in 1989, CUPS and its volunteers have worked alongside Mexican community volunteers to construct houses, potable water systems, kindergartens, health clinics, churches, and community centers. The belief is that with cooperation, fellowship, and service we will promote a lasting testament of our faith in action. With volunteer support CUPS is able to positively affect thousands of individuals in unique and varied ways, demonstrating brotherly love and commitment to service.

The 2005 trip was taken March 19 - 26. Enjoy these wonderful pictures as well as the fabulous testimony of trip participant, Betty Fraser.

MUSINGS FROM A FIRST TIME MISSION TRIP

"Blest be the tie that binds." This familiar hymn has a much deeper meaning for me since returning from my first mission trip. As a very senior, first timer with no aptitude for the Spanish language, I had no expectations, only the hope of survival

For several years I had wanted to participate in the important foreign mission program of our church, but there was always some reason not to go. This year, when my friend Lula Estes said she needed a roommate, I saw my chance

It was an amazing experience on many levels. Church members, whom I had not known, became co-workers and good friends, and those I had known became dearer friends. The same accepting friendship was true among members of the Clarksville Presbyterian Church who shared our mission assignment. There were 14 young people who added not only work, but also many smiles and much laughter

The mission purpose was to build a medical clinic in Valle Hermosa. The tasks were divided into two sections: an on-site building team and a warehouse team that painted wall boards and trims for the building and assembled gift packages for children. There was always essential work to be done for a wide variety of skill levels. Only a few were over-worked, and none seemed bored

Because of the language barrier, I had limited verbal contact with the Mexicans; but I was aware of the pleasure they enjoyed with our group. Underlying all of the activity, the fellowship, and the laughter, there seemed to be the prevailing "tie that binds our hearts in Christian love; the fellowship of kindred minds." This was particularly true as we worshiped with the Mexicans in their Presbyterian church. The language may have differed, but we were one in reverence and spirit

If you have been on a mission trip, I imagine you have similar memories. If you have not yet gone on one, don't wait to experience the personal growth and pure joy that awaits you. I am so glad I went, and I hope I will be able to go again.
