Our Call to Missions

The church exists for mission: to continue and complete, through the power of the Holy Spirit, Jesus Christ's work of reconciliation (The Confession of 1967, section 9.07). The mission of the church then is to work for the reconciliation of men and women to God and to one another.

The mission of reconciliation is to make the Word come alive: the Word that tells us God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him may not perish but may have eternal life; the Word that commands us to love God with all our heart, mind, and soul and our neighbors as ourselves; the Word that tells us we are the light of the world and that we are to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that Jesus commanded us.

When new members join First Presbyterian Church, they are asked to answer affirmatively: Will you give your whole heart to the service of Christ and His kingdom throughout the world? It is a daunting task to be the light of the world!! What would happen if we truly gave our whole hearts to the service of Christ and His kingdom throughout the world?

The mission programs of First Presbyterian Church are our endeavors to work for the reconciliation of men and women to God and to one another as we seek to know Jesus Christ, make Him known, and show His love to others through worship, education, and service.

The needs of the world run deep. As we reach out in compassion to a hurting world, we respond to the needs of our community, our nation, our world. Our 2010 budget includes mission giving of $1,049,400. Monies will flow to fund the building of new worship and education facilities for the Kanombe Congregation in Kigali for the Presbyterian Church in Rwanda as we continue to support the efforts of our brothers and sisters in Christ to expand the Christian church as they continue reconciliation efforts following the horrific genocide of 15 years ago.

Other mission teams and funds will support the construction of church buildings for the Presbyterian Church in Belize and the growing Christian church in Cuba.

Mission funds will support ministries to poor children in Nashville through the Martha O'Bryan Center and Preston Taylor Ministries; ministry to new immigrant populations through support of our Presbytery's Nations Ministry Center and African Leadership; and new church development in Middle Tennessee.

Our mission funds will support campus ministries, youth missions carried on by our own young people throughout the world, Habitat for Humanity, and local ministries that provide assistance to the imprisoned and their families and those who lack adequate housing, food, medical care and job training. There are many other ministries assisted through our church and our members' generous giving of their monies, time and talents!!

Do you have a desire to serve God and others? Your abilities and talents for missions are needed!! For more information about volunteering for a mission trip or assisting with a mission project at First Presbyterian Church or with a local mission in our community, please call Sandra Randleman at 298-9502 or Patricia Heim at 298-9593.

May God grant us hearts that grow in compassion and love, hands that abound in generous giving and in good works, and the wisdom to discern how God would have us share the abundance of gifts He has given to us!! May we truly give our whole hearts to the service of Christ and His kingdom throughout the world!!

Thanks be to God!!
