Senior High Summer Mission Trip to New Orleans

On Friday morning, June 20, 35 seniors and 6 adults rode a bus to Birmingham, AL and then jumped on the train to New Orleans, LA arriving around 8 p.m. that evening. After crazy van rides through the French Quarter to get to our dinner spot, we ate and headed to our home for the week, St. Jude’s Community Center. The next day, Dave Coryell, led the seniors in an assessment of their personalities and strengths through various interactive games and talks in preparation for their time as “the leaders” on this trip.

Sunday evening, June 26, 100 rising 9th-11th graders and 20 chaperones arrived by train. They were welcomed vigorously by the senior group, everyone running through a human tunnel as they entered the train station. Not enough can be said concerning the senior leadership and the roles they took on to set the example and tone for the rest of the group.

Monday through Friday consisted of early mornings, 10 different work groups (approximately 15 people in each group) heading out to various worksites, such as demolition work at the former Lindy Boggs Medical Center that is now being converted to space for St. Margaret's Retirement Center, outdoor yard work on abandoned homes, re-construction work on personal residences, VBS, and more. As always, we go in thinking about the way we will serve, and are pleasantly surprised at how we are served by those in the community. Swamp Tours, Rock n’ Bowl, Café Du Monde and New Orleans snowballs were just some of the local flavors we were able to enjoy.

We are grateful to God for watching over the details of each day during our time. Thanks again to the chaperones, seniors and 9th-11th graders for adding so much to a fruitful and meaningful mission experience!
