Twenty-seven tenth graders and 5 adult leaders left for Cranks Creek, KY, Monday, July 16th. We arrived in time for a wonderful meal cooked by Ms. Belinda and Ms. Sharon, before gathering for worship with the other 72 youth from the South East.
The following day, we were split up into 9 work groups that traveled out into the community to perform various tasks for the sick and/or disabled. Two of the groups built wheelchair ramps (one was a whopping 40 feet long), while other groups performed roofing, scraping (and lots of it), painting, rebuilding porches, replacing toilets and showers, and constructing an apron around the base of a home. Everyone worked with little complaint, and with much love and commitment for the people they were serving.

The girls slept in a rustic bunk house, with 22 of us in one room. The boys had less crowded conditions in their double wide, two miles down the road.
We all meet at the end of the work day at Martin's Fork Lake for our daily "bath" and recreation. The lake sat beautifully in a valley of the Appalachians and was pristine clean.
Although many came home on July 21st with scrapes, bruises and blisters, they all brought home love and compassion for the people of the poverty stricken area we served. |
